Organ perfusion platform
SOLO-1 Organ Cradle
Machine perfusion for donor kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs, built as one platform. The first device is a cradle for a single kidney or liver. Heart and lung cassettes come in a later generation.
SOLO-1 is an investigational device in early development. It has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or any other regulatory authority. It is not available for sale and is not in use with patients or donor organs.
Engineering notesEvidence this approach rests onWhat organ perfusion isDisclosures
Organs
The cradle is designed to preserve a donor organ outside the body for transplantation, using perfusion methods already tested by other groups in randomized trials. Those trials are not studies of SOLO-1.
- KidneyGeneration 1Hypothermic and hypothermic oxygenated perfusion, one organ at a time.
- LiverGeneration 1The same single-organ cassette and circuit as the kidney cradle.
- HeartGeneration 2A heart cassette is part of the later multi-organ cradle, not the first device.
- LungGeneration 2A lung cassette is intended for a later generation, not the first device.
Generations
The same sequence is on the homepage roadmap. Timings are estimates. They depend on research, clinical results, regulatory review and funding, and they may change or not occur.
1. Generation 1: organ cradle
Years 1–2Hypothermic and hypothermic oxygenated perfusion for a single kidney or liver, in a sterile single-use cassette.
- Dual pumps with automatic failover
- Continuous pressure, flow, and temperature monitoring, with sensor provisions for oxygen in a future oxygenated mode.
- Designed to keep a tamper-evident record of every event, preserved through power loss.
2. Generation 2: multi-organ cradle
LaterLater generations are intended to explore normothermic perfusion, viability assessment, and heart and lung cassettes.
- Normothermic perfusion
- Viability assessment
- Heart and lung cassettes
- Research goal · not a product commitment
3. Whole-body preservation
Long termA long-term research direction. It depends on advances in cryopreservation that have not been demonstrated in human organs, let alone a whole body, and may not be achieved.
- Builds on organ-scale vitrification research
- Progress reported through peer review
- No timeline or claims of revival
- Research goal · not a product commitment
4. Dedicated facilities
Long termIf long-term preservation becomes possible, it would need purpose-built facilities with shared power, cooling and monitoring.
- Dependent on research outcomes
- Not part of current development
“Clinical study” in generation 2 is a planned step. No clinical study of SOLO-1 is underway, and none has been completed.
